Manchester United and Tottenham will rekindle swap talks this summer

Rumours of transfer swap deals between Premier League rivals rarely come of. However, a summer deal between Manchester United and Tottenham could prove to be the exception to this rule. Both clubs will explore swapping left backs when the summer transfer window opens.
Jose Mourinho’s recent comments about Luke Shaw make it clear the Englishman has no future at Old Trafford. As Paul Scholes correctly pointed out, the United manager’s mind is completely made up about the former Southampton man. Even if Shaw were to play well in a match or two, it wouldn’t change Mourinho’s opinion of him.
The idea of reuniting Shaw with his former manager, Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino, makes a lot of sense. The two clearly had a terrific relationship at Southampton and Pochettino’s tutelage could be just what Shaw needs to revive his career. Remember, he’s still just 22-years-old. There’s plenty of time for him to reach his massive potential.
The idea gains steam when you consider Mourinho’s obvious interest in Spurs left back Danny Rose. The English international hasn’t enjoyed a brilliant campaign for Pochettino. It’s possible his mediocre play his still related to injury, but it’s also possible he isn’t going to regain his brilliant form from the 2016-17 campaign. Add his struggles with his extremely public desire to earn wages above Daniel Levy’s wage scale and it’s easy to see him moving to United.
The old adage that one man’s trash is another man’s treasure may come into play here. Neither Pochettino or Mourinho is enthralled with their current left back options. It’s logical to believe that a change of scenery could help one or both players return to their previous glory. The real question is whether or not United and Tottenham are willing to take the risk of seeing their player flourish while playing for a Premier League rival.
There’s also a question of whether or not the two sides believe the two players have equal value. It’s safe to assume that Tottenham would push for some cash to be added to the swap deal to even things out. Even in his diminished form, Rose has clearly been more reliable than Shaw this season. Shaw’s youth isn’t going to be enough to overcome that gap.
