According to the Spanish outlet Sport, Iker San Vicente who is one of Spain’s most promising young defenders will sign for Barcelona in the coming weeks. Osasuna, where San Vicente is currently training hoped that the youngster would sign his first professional contract as he turned 16. But the youngster refused to sign his first contract at Osasuna as he has his eyes set on Barcelona.
Both Real Madrid and Juventus were also reportedly interested but the youngster has instead chosen the iconic La Masia to progress his football career.
After the golden generation of La Masia which saw the likes of Lionel Messi, Cesc Fabregas, Gerard Pique, Pedro, etc graduate from the famed youth academy, Barcelona have not been able to integrate any of their home grown youngsters into their first team. The likes of Sergi Roberto and Gerard Deulofeu have been in and around the first team but nobody has cemented their first team spot. Coupled with Real Madrid strengthening their youth recruitment and Manchester City with their world class facilities attracting a lot of youngsters from Spain, Barcelona’s youth system appeared to be on a decline. They have been trying to reverse the trend now by aggressively trying to recruit talented players but only time will tell whether we will get to see another batch like the famed batch of 2002.
