Kylian Mbappe breaks longstanding Michael Owen record

Kylian Mbappe was shortlisted for the Ballon d’Or yesterday and with it broke a long-standing record held by Michael Owen. The French striker was one of 30 players named by France Football who are in contention for the most prestigious individual award in football.

It comes after an incredible year for the teenager in which he helped fire Monaco to the Ligue 1 title and his goals fired them to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Over the summer he joined PSG with an agreement he will cost £166million when his one-season loan deal expires. His inclusion in the Ballon d’Or reckoning at the age of 18 years and nine months mean he’s the youngest player to be shortlisted in the history of the award. The previous holder of that record was former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker Michael Owen.

Owen was named in 1998 when still a Liverpool player and would go on to win the award three years later – the most recent English player to do so.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the strong favourite to claim the award with the winner being announced on December 6. Should he do so it would be his fifth, drawing him level with Lionel Messi’s haul.
