Mesut Ozil wants to join Manchester United

After this season, the German’s contract with Arsenal is expiring and he has expressed his desire to leave North London and join Manchester United.

Ozil has struggled so far this season with Arsenal. Confidence at the North London side seems to be at an all-time low with constant rumblings of Arsene Wenger getting fired. Before the start of the Premier League season there were reports of Alexis Sanchez leaving but it didn’t happen. But it seems inevitable that he will leave and Ozil will follow as well.
At Real Madrid, Ozil was under current United skipper Jose Mourinho. While in the Spanish capital he was part of a La Liga title-winning team in 2011-12. He was part of a World Cup winning German side in 2014. Last season at Arsenal he got 12 goals, a career high and first time he reached double-digit goals since 2012-13 at Real Madrid.
However, the question becomes if Ozil would fit in at Old Trafford. He can be an attacking midfielder or winger on either side of the pitch; and right now those areas have become pretty crowded. Right now Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford are sharing the left side and doing quite well. Henrikh Mkhitaryan has found his home at the 10 position largely leaving Juan Mata to man the right wing. So Ozil could provide some depth on the right side. But I just don’t know if Ozil would go somewhere where he would not get many starts.
As far as money is concerned, that will not be an issue. Manchester United made record profits last year and even with Ozil demanding a quarter of a million pounds a week it would not be a problem. But would he be willing to accept a lesser role on a potentially great team?
It’s what Robin Van Persie did and he became a Premier League champion in his first season at United. But should Ozil come into the fold, the sights will be set much higher. He may be only a support player and not the main attraction, but he could provide a crucial depth piece for a campaign that would be loaded with fixtures from Premier League and Champions League play.
