The US President has said “transgender individuals” will not be allowed to serve in the military “in any capacity” blaming “disruption” and “tremendous medical costs”.
He made the announcement in a series of tweets on Wednesday afternoon, writing: “After consultation with my Generals and military experts, please be advised that the United States Government will not accept or allow transgender individuals to serve in any capacity in the US Military.
“Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail. Thank you.”

There is no official count of transgender service members in the US but last year, the thinktank Rand estimated about 2,450 of the 1.3 million active duty service members are transgender.
Other groups, such as Transgender American Veterans Association, OutServe-SLDN and the American Military Partner Association cite a higher figure of 15,500.
